The fourth oldest University in the world has invested in PaperCut MF and PaperCut Mobility Print to facilitate hybrid printing for its 20,000 students and over 11,000 staff members.
A requirement for hybrid printing was not just driven by the number of print devices and end-users, but accelerated by the UK’s COVID-19 lockdowns – causing students and staff to be divided between working at home and on-site.
With Google Cloud Print’s deprecation on the horizon, Kelvin Morgan, computer officer; and Dean Feltham, print technician, were in need of a robust BYOD print enablement feature to support the University’s network infrastructures. All while continuing to support the students via their centralised print subscription service.
PaperCut MF software allows for simple and affordable print and copier control which is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux – allowing for the user and device-level management and control for all print devices. To help students and staff that are self-isolating, it has set up PaperCut MF’s Delegated Print feature which means that rather than having the print job held in a queue, it can be set up so another person can release the job and collect the prints on behalf of the student.
Another advantage of PaperCut Mobility print is the ability to remotely send print jobs outside of the university network by uploading jobs over the internet. The tool then enables easy printing from BYO iPads, iPhones, Android, Windows, Chromebook, and any Mac device.
Cambridge’s printing service grows from strength to strength with help from the newly integrated PaperCut, and is in high demand: “We have students coming up to us saying that they want to use the service,” says Kelvin.
“Managed print as a service can be both time-consuming and difficult to get right,” says Kelvin. “PaperCut goes the extra mile to help make it work really well and efficiently. This track record has given Colleges and departments the confidence to subscribe to the University’s managed print service, this frees up local IT support staff time to focus on other tasks.”
