Wayne Elphick establishes Lex after gaining vast industry experience. Ultimately, the business begins operating from small offices above a shop in Haslingden, Lancashire. Lex focuses on repairing and maintaining typewriters and cash registers for local businesses, retailers and food/drink establishments.
Lex begins selling Olivetti Linea 98 typewriters, designed by Olivetti in Italy. In short, the typewriters feature a QWERTY keyboard and are extremely popular with professional services firms across the local area.
First major contract wins for Lex: to supply Preston Polytechnic College with 240 of the first portable computer in development. Lex also become the exclusive resellers of the Amstrad PC, which was a hugely popular product during the time. For education together with businesses.
Lex purchases and reconfigures a row of four terraced houses in Radcliffe, Bury, where the company still operates from today. Thereafter, when construction works were complete, ‘Systems House’ serves as the businesses principal location. Together with an impressive product showroom, workshop, warehouse, as well as a floor of office suites for its staff.
We establish a partnership with Mita, the leading manufacturer of black/white photocopiers. Lex drives forward supplying local firms with reprographic equipment supported by their own in-house team of engineers.
Lex begin sales of colour reprographic and printing equipment from Olivetti. With the intention of making colour printing and copying as openly available and affordable as possible – particularly to local schools and businesses.
The new decade consequently enables creation of two new company divisions – office stationery and office furniture. Lex also launches an intuitive online ordering facility for customers both B2B and B2C; offering a next-day guaranteed delivery on over 25,000 products.
Lex complete their rebrand project, forming a new corporate identity - as Lex. As the business develops its product and service offering over the 35 years to more than just ‘Business Equipment’.
Lex celebrates 38 years of business reporting a successful year with turnover growth of 38%. As well as the continuation of development of our product offering to its customers. We remain the northwest’s favourite single-source supplier for everything office!
