Lex was established by Wayne Elphick after gaining vast industry experience – the business began its operation from small offices above a shop in Haslingden, Lancashire. Lex focused on repairing and maintaining typewriters and cash registers for local businesses, retailers and food/drink establishments.
Lex began selling Olivetti Linea 98 typewriters, designed by Olivetti in Italy – the typewriters featured a QWERTY keyboard, and were extremely popular with professional services firms across the local area.
First major contract win for Lex – to supply Preston Polytechnic College with 240 of the first portable computer to be developed. Lex were the exclusive resellers of the Amstrad PC, which was a hugely popular product during the time – both for education and businesses.
Lex purchased and reconfigured a row of 4 terraced houses in Radcliffe, Bury – where the company still operates from today. After construction works were complete ‘Systems House’ was the businesses principal location with an impressive product showroom, workshop, warehouse, as well as a floor of office suites for its staff.
Partnership with Mita was established, the leading manufacturer of black/white photocopiers. Lex drove forward supplying local firms with reprographic equipment supported by their own in-house team of engineers.
Lex begin sales of colour reprographic and printing equipment, manufactured by Olivetti who are based in Italy. With the intention of making colour printing and copying as openly available and affordable as possible – particularly to local schools and businesses.
Creation of two new company divisions – office stationery and office furniture. Lex launch an intuitive online ordering facility for customers both B2B and B2C; offering a next-day guaranteed delivery on over 25,000 products.
Lex complete their rebrand project, and a new corporate identity is formed – as Lex. As the business has developed its product and service offering over the 35 years to more than just ‘Business Equipment’.
As Lex celebrate 38 years of business they report a successful year with turnover growth of 38%, as well as continued development of its product offering to its customers. Remaining as the northwest’s favourite single-source supplier for everything office!
